Mathematics at Parkhill Infants' School

Mathematics

At Parkhill Infants School, our aim is to support children in becoming confident, resilient, skilled mathematicians who understand that mathematics is a fundamental part of our daily lives.  We want children to enjoy and develop a love of mathematics, and become fluent in number skills and enjoy finding their own ways of solving problems.

Our intention is to help children make sense of the world all around them, by developing their ability to count, calculate, reason, solve problems, find patterns and order and appreciate how mathematics is an integral part of their everyday lives.

At Parkhill, our mathematical learning is underpinned by a mastery approach, promoting understanding of both conceptual and procedural processes. We want our children to know what they are doing and why they are doing it.

All classes from Reception to Year 2 follow the Maths – No Problem! scheme of work, a DfE and NCETM approved programme of study developed in Singapore and fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum.

In addition, these classes have Mastering Number lessons four times a week.

  • All lessons employ ambitious, precise and high quality vocabulary which the children are taught to use both orally and in their written work to express their mathematical thinking.
  • Children have opportunities to reflect, refine and question their mathematical thinking through journaling which begins in year 1 and increases in frequency as the children progress through school.
  • Continuous professional development – We constantly look to develop our practice by regularly attending relevant courses and engaging with our local Maths Hub.

Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.

We aim to:

  • promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion;
  • promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number system;
  • develop children's understanding through a CPA approach (concrete - pictorial - abstract) which allows children to make greater sense of mathematical concepts;
  • develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts;
  • develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented;
  • explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts;
  • understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life;
  • ensure our children are fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, can recall knowledge rapidly and accurately,  reach  their mathematical potential and meaningfully engage with the world they live in;
  • Ensure we provide depth and breadth of experience over acceleration – to avoid superficial learning, teachers carefully sequence lessons so that children have opportunities to demonstrate mastery at each point of the lesson before being moved on.

The school also subscribes to Mathletics, an online program which allows children to access learning outside of school.  It is used for homework in KS1, and teachers set the children challenges to complete. Certificates are awarded for every child who takes part in a challenge and we have an awards board in the main corridor to celebrate their successes.   We are also setting each child up with an individual subscription to Espresso Education, which has many maths resources for children to use.

If your child does not have a note of their userID and password please contact the school office.
